Nowadays, hospital information systems (HIS) provide real-time data and information in order to guide public health organizations especially in decision-making. The hospital information systems are integrated information systems designed to manage the administrative, financial and clinical tasks or aspects of a hospital. It plays an important role in planning, initiating, organizing and controlling the operations of the hospital, and a crucial role in providing quality healthcare services. The aims of this paper are to explore and provide a better understanding of data security aspects in hospital information systems, and add more body of knowledge in information systems (IS) field in the healthcare industry. The views of previous researches are presented and discussed, and new area of interest to the IS and HIS community then are proposed.

Information security and privacy in the healthcare sector is an issue of growing importance. The adoption of digital patient records, increased regulation, provider consolidation, and the increasing need for information between patients, providers, and payers, all point towards the need for better information security. We critically survey the research literature on information security and privacy in healthcare, published in both information systems, non-information systems disciplines including health informatics, public health, law, medicine, and popular trade publications and reports. In this paper, we provide a holistic view of the recent research and suggest new areas of interest to the information systems community.

Information security in the health information system has been technology-centric and no strategy has been put forward to meet the demands of the rapid adoption of e-Health in the health industry. The implementation of security requires a good understanding of the stake holders involved and requires the technical aspect of clinical information security, including security requirements, access control and disclosure control. However, since technology-centric security is prone to failure, a stringent strategic approach is quintessential. This chapter discusses the ways to safeguard medical information assets from the strategy point of view. This study shows that most of the existing clinical information security literature and practice has been focused on tactical prevention at a technical level. This understanding of the current status of clinical information security not only suggests the need for a shift from the technical approach to the strategic approach but also raises the necessity for the employment of multiple strategies working in a harmonised way.
