Probiotics as a Treatment for “Metabolic Depression”? A Rationale for Future Studies

Abstract: Depression and metabolic diseases often coexist, having several features in common, e.g., chronic low-grade inflammation and intestinal dysbiosis. Different microbiota interventions have been proposed to be used as a treatment for these disorders. In the paper, we review the efficacy of probiotics in depressive disorders, obesity, metabolic syndrome and its liver equivalent based on the published experimental studies, clinical trials and meta-analyses. Probiotics seem to be effective in reducing depressive sym… Show more

“…For example, there is limited but promising evidence with regard to the effectiveness of probiotics regarding the risk of depressiveness or anxiety in the perinatal period [ 44 , 45 ], and probiotics may have a favorable effect on overweight-induced cognitive impairment and anxiety [ 46 ]. More specifically, little is known whether probiotic mixtures have favorable effects on psychometric, metabolic and inflammation measures in a population with depression, with or without MetS as a comorbidity [ 47 ].…”

“…Moreover, evidence reports probiotics have denoted effectiveness in reducing depressive symptoms when combined with antidepressants and ameliorating the coexisting metabolic disorders, but there are no standardized recommendations for MDD [210]. Popularly known, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have been the most extensively used genera for the restraint of undesired bacteria (i.e., overgrowth of Escherichia coli or the opportunistic infection of Citrobacter rodentium) and the strengthening of intestinal epithelia in gastrointestinal disorders.…”

“…In the tangled mess of the multiple factors involved in MDD, gut dysbiosis and intestinal complaints are frequent. Evidence alleges that probiotics are effective in ameliorating depressive symptoms when administered with antidepressants, not only for the gut–brain axis but also for the metabolic disturbances of comorbidities that are particularly frequent in MDD (metabolic syndrome) [ 189 ]. Nevertheless, standardized methods to measure probiotics efficacy in clinical trials remain unclear.…”
