Problem-based learning and case-based learning in dental education

Abstract: Background: Numerous novel teaching methods have been developed in recent times for use in medical education. Of these methods, problem-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL) have attracted the most attention. We evaluated and compared the efficiency of these two teaching methods in dental education and discussed the importance of teachers to these courses. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of PBL and CBL in dental education, and discuss the importance of teachers to the courses. Methods: I… Show more

“…Creative thinking and logical reasoning skills are developed through continuous thinking, and oral expression skills and team spirit are developed through communication among classmates [ 12 ]. Most importantly, PBL teaching enables students to understand how to analyse, organize and apply the relevant knowledge, master the correct learning methods, and improve their comprehensive ability [ 13 ]. Throughout our teaching process, we found that students were more interested in learning how to use the 3D visualization software than in understanding the boring professional medical concepts covered by textbooks, so in our study, the students in the experimental group were generally more motivated to engage in the learning process than the control group.…”

“…However, we still need to adhere to the evaluation of teaching progress and teaching effect in the teaching process. Unreasonable teaching design or failure to raise questions to the teaching guidance team in time will have a certain impact on the teaching quality [ 10 ]. Therefore, CBL is gradually promoted on the basis of PBL.…”

“…Previous research explored the construction of a rational teaching model to support clinical learning and collegial relationships building [40]. It is well known that new types of teaching approaches such as Problem-based Learning (PBL) or Case-based Learning (CBL) help to improve the effectiveness of the internship [41]. In terms of theoretical knowledge learning, PBL helps students enhance their interest in learning and improve their self-learning abilities [42].…”
