Problem-solving appraisal, self-reported study habits, and performance of academically at-risk college students.

Abstract: We examined the relations among problem-solving appraisal, self-reported study habits, and academic performance for 63 college students enrolled in a developmental course for academically unprepared students. The participants completed measures of self-appraised problem-solving ability and study habits. Indexes of academic ability and performance were also collected. Regression analyses revealed that problem-solving appraisal was significantly predictive of study habits and semester grade-point average. The re… Show more

“…Several research findings have continuously expounded on the fact that high achievers have better study habits than low achievers, which explains their continuous good academic performance. This is because study habits are positively related to the academic performance of students (Aluja & Blanch, 2004;Culler & Hollan, 1980;Elliot et al, 1990). In addition, the ability of students to employ appropriate study habits influences how much they are able to recall and accurately demonstrate during a test or examination, which is the yardstick of academic performance.…”

“…Erozkan (2013) came to conclusion that having effective problem-solving skills improved communication skills. It was also thought that efficient problem solvers use much behavior to be successful in an academic environment, and in relation to that, it was seen that intrinsic feelings and behaviors such as problem-solving capacity, social assistance, and self-confidence are also generally related to intellectual successes such as sport and art (Elliott, Godshall, Shrout, & Witty, 1990). Baumann (1994) stated that attention should be paid to creative thinking in physical education lessons and especially in gymnastics lessons.…”

“…Statistical analysis showed that students' self-appraisal of their ability was positively related to their study habits identified by the SSHA. These students appeared to be aware of their deficiencies in study behaviors and open to interventions that could improve their performance (Elliott, Godshall, Shrout, & Witty, 1990). …”
