Process for mounting and packaging of fiber Bragg grating strain sensors for use in harsh environment applications

Abstract: In this paper, we report the development of a new bonding agent and method for the surface mounting of optical fiber Bragg grating strain and temperature sensors for use in harsh environments. The compound is based on a combination of ceramic fillers with an epoxy binder that is applied with a brush technique. Samples of optical fiber Bragg gratings were successfully encapsulated and mounted on metal shims. The packaged sensors were tested for strain (+/-1000µε) and temperature (-20 to +120 °C) response. The e… Show more

“…The application of FBG-based sensors to strain monitoring has required suitable technological solutions, including mounting supports and packaging of the sensor, which are necessary for harsh environments [12,13]. In some of these solutions, the fibre with the inscribed grating is fixed (usually glued) to the sensor structure in two permanent positions, and often pre-tensioned in order to measure both positive and negative strain values.…”

“…Metal foil [3] and resonant strain gauge [4] measurements drift due to their temperature sensitivity. High-temperature encapsulation of Bragg-grating strain sensors has enhanced their operation in intense environments [5]. However they are sensitive to temperature and also its size and development costs limit their application and adoption However, capacitive sensing mechanism is intrinsically temperature insensitive and exhibits higher performance stability and reliability for long-term application purposes.…”
