Proclivities for prevalence and treatment of antibiotics in the ambient water: a review

Abstract: In the intial two decades of the twenty-first century, antibiotic (AB) resistance in human pathogens has emerged as a major challenge for water, sanitation, and public health. Considering these challenges, we critically reviewed AB-related studies with particular emphasis on their (i) patterns of consumption, (ii) pathway prevalences and environmental implications in ambient waters, and (iii) benefits and limitations of existing AB removal/purging techniques. We found that lifestyle, land use, urbanization, th… Show more

“…TC is one of the typical ECs in the class of antibiotics . Residual TC in the environment can affect the growth of aquatic animals and plants, which potentially endanger human health through the food chain . Here, TC was used as the target pollutant to investigate the self-purification performance of the Fe-CCM system.…”

“…Herein, this last effluent is reported to contained up to three times higher chemical load than others (Verlicchi, 2021;Verlicchi et al, 2012). In recent literature, the detection of common antibiotics in surface water was reported to range 1.7-524 ng dm -3 of clarithromycin (Boleda et al, 2011;Padhye et al, 2014), 32.3-2,910 ng dm -3 of erythromycin during different seasons (Yao et al, 2017), 1-200,000 ng dm -3 of amoxicillin (Bhagat et al, 2020), 62-80 ng dm -3 of chloramphenicol (Tran et al, 2016) in WWTPs or 29-67 ng dm -3 of norfloxacin (Leung et al, 2012). Additionally, ibuprofen, diclofenac and ketoprofen (anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs) were found at concentrations of 43.7-2,014.7 ng dm -3 in groundwater from China.…”

“…The use of various pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, analgesics, and hormonal stimulants, like human medicine and veterinary drugs, has led to their continual introduction into the environment [36] . To this end, antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin are the most prevalent contaminants among pharmaceuticals, with concentrations up to 28–31 mg/L in wastewater of developing countries [37] . Personal‐care products (PCPs) are a mixture of chemicals used to improve living standards, e. g., preservatives, pH regulators, and emulsifiers.…”

[37] Personal-care products (PCPs) are a mixture of chemicals used to improve living standards, e. g., preservatives, pH regulators, and emulsifiers. For example, paraben and 4methyl-benzylidene-camphor (4-MBC) are the widely used PCPs for preservative and sunscreen ultraviolet filters, respectively.…”
