Prodigiosin Analogue Designed for Metal Coordination: Stable Zinc and Copper Pyrrolyldipyrrins

Abstract: The pyrrolyldipyrrin motif is found in several naturally occurring prodigiosin pigments. The potential roles of the interactions of prodigiosins with transition metals and the properties of metal-bound pyrrolyldipyrrins, however, have been difficult to assess because of the very limited number of well-characterized stable complexes. Here, we show that the introduction of a meso-aryl substituent and an ethyl ester group during the sequential assembly of the three heterocycles affords a pyrrolyldipyrrin of enhan… Show more

“…The Cu–N bond distances are similar to those found in other tripyrrolic complexes 5053 and in the parent compound [Cu(TD1 • )(H 2 O)]. 35 As expected for a ligand-based oxidation and also observed in the case of [Pd(TD1 • )(H 2 O)], 33 the redox state of the ligand system affects (up to ±0.05 Å) the C–N and C–C bond lengths in the conjugated system.…”

“…The characteristic SPR band of the solution was observed between 420-425 nm at a concentration of prodigiosin higher than 2 μg/ml, which could be due to the formation of spherical-shaped AgNPs (Annadhasan et al, 2014). It is well known that a surface plasmon band of spherical AgNPs appears around 420 nm (Park et al, 2003;Suber et al, 2005;Chang et al, 2014). The particle size obtained from DLS measurement was larger than TEM result (9.98 nm), because DLS measures the hydrodynamic radius that considers the prodigiosin pigment on the surface of AgNPs (El-Batal et al, 2014).…”

“…The planar nitrogens in prodigiosin and its analogs can chelate copper and zinc, and also alter cellular pH (23)(24)(25). In cultured cell lines, prodigiosin can exert effects similar to those of the polyether ionophores salinomycin and nigericin, which inhibit the activity of vacuolar H + -adenosine triphosphatase (V-ATPase) (26).…”
