The use of biofuels, such as ethanol, is seen as a viable alternative, due to the growing need for alternative clean energy sources, research on the subject has been intensified, especially when it comes to fuels, the search for a reduction in energy consumption. The rate of gases responsible for the greenhouse effect, therefore, makes it necessary to replace fossil fuels with clean and renewable fuels. The 2nd. Generation (E2G), compared to 1st Ethanol. Generation (E1G), has shown significant environmental and social gains, as it is produced from waste, uses less natural resources and energy. Within this context, this work aims to analyze the efficiency and economic viability of the production of second generation alcohol – E2G. Based on an exploratory bibliographic research, in the following databases, academic google and web of Science, in articles published on the topic discussed here, from 2010 onwards. second-generation alcohol with first-generation alcohol, to discover its economic viability and production efficiency.

“…In regards to enzyme characteristics, the most prominent are final product volume, enzyme denaturation and irreversible enzyme adsorption on the substratum. On the other hand, the main factors in regards to the substratum are the lignin, porosity, cellulose fibers crystallinity and hemicellulose content, among others (Moreira et al 2015;Piccolo and Bezzo 2009). The conversion rate of cellulosic residues into glycose, which is necessary for ethanol's production, was estimated around 90.85% while the alcoholic fermentation processes yield was estimated in 85.35%, at temperatures of 120 o C, on pre-treatment stage.…”

The purpose of this study is to investigate Second Generation Ethanol’s (SGE) production cycle in order to understand the level of SGE’s technological intensity in the integrated cycle. The suggested methodology comprises of a review of literature surrounding the requirements and indexes of technological intensity. A wide selection of database and review of specialized literature have been described to demonstrate the proposed discussion and conclusions. It has been observed that SGE puts forward a higher level of technological intensity in relation to First Generation Ethanol (FGE).

ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho é investigar e comparar os ciclos produtivos do Etanol de 1ªGeração (E1G) e do Etanol de 2ª Geração (E2G), em termos econômicos, tecnológicos, ambientais e sociais no Brasil, por meio de revisão bibliográfica e entrevista com especialista.O E1G apresentou vantagens econômicas e ambientais com relação aos combustíveis fósseis, mas, apesar dos avanços na mecanização da fase agrícola e do aumento do nível de escolaridade e formalidade dos trabalhadores, ainda está distante de setores não agrícolas. O E2G, em comparação com o E1G, demonstrou ganhos ambientais e sociais significativos, por ser produzido a partir de resíduos, usar menor quantidade de recursos naturais e energia, bem como utilizar mão de oba bastante qualificada envolvida em uma tecnologia mais complexa.Contudo, os custos econômicos e os investimentos são superiores aos do E1G. O ciclo integrado constitui uma forma de superar esses desafios por parte das usinas. Palavras-chave:Etanol, Primeira Geração, Segunda Geração, Brasil.
