Business Model Experimentation for the Circular Economy: Definition and Approaches

Business model experimentation has been identified as a key driver for business competitiveness but is underexplored in the sustainability and circular economy spheres. What is business model experimentation for the circular economy? This study follows a two-step approach: a literature analysis followed by a qualitative practitioner study. Based on these, circular business model experimentation is defined as an iterative approach to develop and test circular value propositions in a real-life context with customers and stakeholders, starting with a shared goal. It involves rapid learning based on empirical data to provide evidence on the viability of circular value propositions. Iterations involve increased complexity of experiments. There is a learning focus on initiating wider transitions, such as transforming consumer behaviours for the circular economy. We visualise the emerging research landscape, including research streams from business, transitions, engineering, and design. Practically, we illuminate how practitioners view the concept and current experimentation tools and approaches.

In times of increasing concerns and extensive political debates about social and environmental problems, incumbent firms are obliged to reduce their negative environmental impact by implementing sustainable business model innovation. Yet, realizing more sustainable business model variants entails several complexities and associated challenges that need to be overcome. To support this task, this article takes an entrepreneurship perspective on sustainable business model innovation and combines literature of business models and entrepreneurial lean thinking (ELT). In doing so, it derives a workshop design grounded in contemporary theory with state-of-the-art tools and methods. The workshop is framed as a stage-gate process facilitating the notions of ELT with iterative cycles of ‘create, test, and improve’ and spans the phases of opportunity identification, opportunity evaluation, opportunity development through sustainable business model design, and decision of opportunity exploitation. The article shows that ELT is an appropriate yet underutilized approach for sustainable business modeling. Further, it discusses how the workshop supports opportunities and mitigate pitfalls of ELT for sustainable business modeling. As such, the findings have theoretical implications for the intersection of sustainability and lean approaches in innovation research as well as implications for practitioners by providing a comprehensive framework to support sustainable business model innovation.

A inovação de processo permite a melhoria do processo produtivo e performance organizacional, no qual o triple bottom line (econômico, ambiental e social), pode ser sustentável, pois reduz os impactos ambientais no meio ambiente e aumenta a competitividade organizacional. As ações sociais desenvolvidas pelas organizações podem beneficiar os colaboradores, assim como a comunidade local. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a inovação de processo, as práticas ambientais e as ações sociais desenvolvidas por duas indústrias metalmecânicas situadas na região norte e nordeste do Rio Grande do Sul (RS). A metodologia utilizada tratou-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa e exploratória, por meio de um estudo de casos múltiplos. Os resultados destacam que as indústrias metalmecânicas desenvolveram importantes inovações de processo as quais abrangem o triple bottom line, no qual reduziram os custos de produção e aumentaram a competitividade organizacional a nível local e mundial, elencando o pilar econômico. No pilar ambiental, foram utilizadas práticas ambientais para segregar e destinar corretamente os resíduos gerados. No pilar social, as ações socias beneficiam diferentes atores, tais como funcionários, crianças, jovens e a comunidade local.
