Production and characterization of inter and intraspecific hybridization eggplant

Abstract: The eggplant is a highly valuable horticultural crop grown all over the world and it is of substantial economic importance in Asia. However, its production is severely threatened by several soil-borne and foliar diseases, insect-pests, drought, heat, and frost damage. Therefore, efforts to transfer useful resistance genes into eggplant from their wild relatives is important. In the present study, interspecific and intraspecific hybridization was carried out, that included three cultivated genotypes of eggplant… Show more

“…450 species distributed worldwide (Knapp et al, 2013). Cultivated eggplant has limited genetic diversity, and this can be expanded by hybridisation with wild relatives, which represent an important source of variation (Daunay and Hazra, 2012;Ghani et al, 2020;Gramazio et al, 2019;Plazas et al, 2016;Rakha et al, 2020). Tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses has been reported among eggplant wild relatives, and some of them are used for eggplant grafting (Gisbert et al, 2011;Khah et al, 2011;Rakha et al, 2020;Sabatino et al, 2018).…”

“…Sin embargo, en la hibridación intraespecífica, las barreras de incompatibilidad son menos rígidas, por lo que muchas veces se recurre a esta para generar variabilidad y obtener vigor híbrido. Este tipo de hibridación ocu-rre cuando se cruzan plantas de diferentes cultivares o distintos genotipos que pertenecen a una misma especie (Ghani et al, 2020, Víquez, 2010.…”

“…Eggplant wild relatives have been found in a wide range of environmental conditions, including desertic areas and other highly stressful environments Plazas et al, 2020). Some of them are of great interest for breeding, in particular for traits related to adaptation to climate change but also pest and disease resistance (Tani et al, 2018;Ghani et al, 2020;Rakha et al, 2020;Kouassi et al, 2021;Plazas et al, 2019Plazas et al, , 2022. Although several efforts have been made to transfer these traits to cultivated eggplant, the use of wild relatives in eggplant breeding is still limited, and no commercial cultivar with traits introgressed from wild relatives have been released until now Boyaci, 2020).…”
