PRODUCTION EFFECTS OF LIVER FLUKE (FASCIOLA HEPATICA) INFECTION IN BEEF CATTLE

Abstract: Young Hereford s t e e r s of even body weights were grazed on pasture a t 2 levels of stocking rate a n d artificially infected with 0, 600 or 1,200 metacercariae of Fasciola hepatica. In addition all g r o u p s obtained a low g r a d e natural infection.S t e e r s w e r e s l a u g h t e r e d a t intervals throughout t h e 32-week trial period a n d total fluke c o u n t s obtained. Fluke c o u n t s were significantly higher in all artificially infected g r o u p s when compared to t h e natural infectio… Show more

“…The ecological conditions of each region, intensive grazing systems or extensive, mixed grazing cattle and sheep; determine the epidemiology of the disease for each region. All the factors that influence the life cycle of the parasite and its transmission must be studied in each case to establish reasonable measures to prevent and control disease (Chick et al, 1980;Chirinos et al, 1991).…”

“…Bovine fascioliasis provides a good example. The miracidia of Fasciola hepatica are generally held to survive around 24 h or less (Pantelouris, 1965;Hope Cawdery, Gettinby & Grainger, 1978), but the mean expected life-spans of the longest-lived stages in the life-cycle, the metacercariae on the pasture and the flukes in the primary host, are also relatively short, being about 10-14 weeks in both cases (Smith, 1982;Chick, Coverdale & Jackson, 1980). This paper reports the results of some experimental work designed to provide a quantitative description of the survival of F. hepatica miracidia under various conditions.…”
