Production of blockboard from small athel slats end-glued by different type of joint

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of joint type of short athel (Tamarix aphila) slats at three levels (butt joint, mitered joint, and half lap joint) in core layer veneer consisting of three wood species (Fir, Beech, and Oak). The joints were glued with PVAc and sandwiched by veneers with different ratios of melamine formaldehyde/urea formaldehyde resin (0:100, 25:75, and 50:50) in glue line to determine the modulus of rupture in dry and wet conditions. It was found that the highest dry and wet modulus of ruptur… Show more

“…Several techniques for bonding small pieces of solid wood and fabricating products with enhanced mechanical properties have been developed (Nairn, 2017;Nazerian at al., 2018). The lack of information on other commercial applications of large waste obtained in the production of engineered wood, aside from those mentioned above, makes it impossible to make an objective assessment of their complex recovery.…”

“…A part of the studies investigated new designs of the structures [6,10] and various raw materials for the core [11][12][13]. Other studies were oriented to the joint types used for the core stripes, to their lengths and their influence on the properties of blockboards [9,14,15].…”

“…As a kind of veneer wood-based panel, blockboard consists of veneers bonded to center layers and is widely used in furniture manufacturing and interior design because of its minimal glue consumption and low cost [1]. In order to increase the environmental protection of blockboard and reduce the waste of materials, Nazerian et al [2] and Teixeira et al [3] improved the center layers of the blockboard, but ignored the quality of the veneers on both sides of the center layers. In recent years, consumers have paid more attention to product appearance and the consistency of the surface texture, but during the growth and processing of wood different types of defects may appear, which will negatively affect the performance and ornamental value of the wood [4,5].…”
