Production ofJ/ψ via ψ’ and χ decay in 300 GeV/cproton- andπ±-nucleon interactions

Abstract: The production of the x\ a°d Xi states of charmonium has been observed in 300 GeV/c K ± N and pN interactions. The fraction of the total inclusive J/y/ production due to radiative % decay has been determined to be 0.40 ± 0.04, 0.37 ± 0.03, and 0.30 ± 0.04 for the TT + , n~", and proton data, respectively. Total cross sections for %\ and xi production of 131 ± 18 ± 14 and 188 ± 30 ± 21 nb/nucleon in the 300 GeV/c n~N interactions have been obtained. By measuring the contributions to the J/y/ production due to b… Show more

“…There is no data on σ(χ c0 ), but our χ c1 /χ c2 ratio is consistent with the value 0.6 ± 0.3 measured in πN collisions [22,23]. The experimental ratio allows a CSM contribution to χ c2 production which is about equal to the one given in Table II (σ(χ c1 ) is small in the CSM).…”

“…The P -wave quarkonium states χ J are produced from quark pairs with S = 0, L = 1 followed by a spin-flip interaction with a transverse gluon from Γ. The calculated cross section ratio σ(χ 1 )/σ(χ 2 ) = 3/5, in agreement with the ratio measured in πN collisions for charmonium, 0.6 ± 0.3 [22,23]. We also find that due to the indirect χ cJ → J/ψ+γ contributions the total J/ψ polarization is slightly longitudinal, λ = −.14 (cf.…”

“…The ratios reported here are somewhat higher than the model for p T > 2 GeV/c, but the data's limited statistical precision and significant theoretical error bands preclude any firm conclusions. Comparison of world data on the ratio of ψ(2S)/ψ(1S) mesons in dilepton decays [21,29,[36][37][38][39][40][41][42].…”

“…Suppression of J=c particles was actually observed in several experiments at the Super Proton Synchrotron [2] and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider [3]. Here, not only J=c but also c and c 0 states contribute to the total yield of J=c [4]. To investigate properties of these charmonia in the deconfinement phase, hadronic spectral functions are studied at zero and finite temperatures.…”
