Abstract:The negative impact of the automotive industry on climate change can be tackled by changing from fossil driven vehicles towards battery electric vehicles with no tailpipe emissions. However their adoption mainly depends on the willingness to pay for the extra cost of the traction battery. The goal of this paper is to predict the cost of a battery pack in 2030 when considering two aspects: firstly a decade of research will ensure an improvement in material sciences altering a battery's chemical composition. Secondly by considering the price erosion due to the production cost optimization, by maturing of the market and by evolving towards to a mass-manufacturing situation. The cost of a lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) battery (Cathode: NMC 6:2:2 ; Anode: graphite) as well as silicon based lithium-ion battery (Cathode: NMC 6:2:2 ; Anode: silicon alloy), expected to be on the market in 10 years, will be predicted to tackle the first aspect. The second aspect will be considered by combining process-based cost calculations with learning curves, which takes the increasing battery market into account. The 100 dollar/kWh sales barrier will be reached respectively between 2020-2025 for silicon based lithium-ion batteries and 2025-2030 for NMC batteries, which will give a boost to global electric vehicle adoption.

Energy storage is one of the key technological factors that determine the success of a sustainable future. Especially green mobility concepts for electric or hybrid electric vehicles highly depend upon storage technologies with high energy density and light-weight materials. At the same time, innovative production processes should be conceived that ensure energy and resource efficient manufacturing of these energy storage devices. This paper focuses on the technical as well as dynamic energetic performance analysis and evaluation of an innovative electrode-separator composite manufacturing process of lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications. The technical performance indicators such as battery capacity and the energy intensity of the manufacturing process are highly dependent upon process parameters, machine and product design. Hence, in-depth process knowledge must be acquired to understand interdependencies between all system components. Thus, the manufacturing process is analysed in terms of its dynamics, and correlations between process parameters, process energy demand and final product properties are assessed. The resulting knowledge is important for the subsequent design of large-scale products and processes involved design, as well as for characterisation of the manufacturing process for life cycle inventory databases or life cycle costing calculations.

The electric vehicle industry has been rapidly developing internationally. Electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) are perceived as a low environmental impact energy storage technology. While the service life of an EVB is relatively long, a significant number of battery packs will reach the end of their service lives eventually. The end-of-life (EOL) EVBs may still have appreciable residual value for remanufacturing and secondary use. Some solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) layers will persist on the surface of electrodes deposit after a period of continuous cycling, causing the battery degradation and failure. An approach to battery end-of-life management was introduced involving remanufacturing of the cathode from EOL lithium-ion battery electrodes, and a recent study on remanufacturing process of the degraded EVBs using pulse laser to radiate SEI on the electrode surface was presented in this paper, here on a laboratory scale. Based on experimental data, the SEI film removal was carried out with laser energy intensity ranging from 0.035 to 0.169 J/mm 2 . The remanufactured cathodes were characterized through a combination of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and wavelength dispersive spectrometer, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the remanufacturing treatments were successful in removing the EOL by-products (e.g., SEI films) and upgrading the cathode to its pre-cycling functionality. It is suggested that the fade capacity of a lithium-ion battery can be recovered by using laser radiation method.
