Production of Rubidium Bose-Einstein Condensates at a 1 Hz Rate

Abstract: We present an experimental apparatus that produces Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of 87 Rb atoms at a rate of 1 Hz. As a demonstration of the system's ability to operate continuously, 30 BECs were produced and imaged in 32.1 s. Without imaging, a single BEC could be produced in 953 ms. The system uses an atom chip to confine atoms in a dimple trap with frequencies exceeding 1 kHz. With this tight trap, the duration of evaporative cooling can be reduced to less than 0.5 s. Using principal component analysis, … Show more

“…The fastest previously reported apparatus features a repetition rate of 1 Hz with 1.5 × 10 4 atoms in the condensed phase, using an atom chip [43]. The fastest BEC in a dipole trap was produced in 3.3 s with an atom number of 3.5 × 10 5 [46].…”

“…The production of BECs in small-volume magnetic chip traps has provided one solution to the timescale problem [8,9]. While this method has recently achieved cycle times of one second with 87 Rb [10], it can only be applied to magnetic atoms.…”

“…The atom chip forms the top of a ColdQuanta RuBECi -a two-chamber, ultrahigh vacuum system designed for the production of rubidium BECs. The RuBECi uses a double MOT approach to laser cooling alkali atoms, and has been described in detail elsewhere [19]. Here, we briefly discuss the differences in the system used for this work, which closely resembles the system described in [17].…”
