Production of Soda Lime Glass Having Antibacterial Property for Industrial Applications

Abstract: This study was aimed to produce and characterize the first commercial glass materials with enhanced antibacterial property using conventional melting method. For this purpose, typical container glass composition that contains some specific metal ions, such as silver, strontium, and copper, was used to obtain antibacterial glass samples using classical melting method. After the melting process, antibacterial tests and migration tests were applied to the glasses, and it was found that the glass doped with 2% Ag2… Show more

“…Soda-lime glass doped with 5.0% zinc oxide was shown in a previous study to have an antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). 41 Therefore, in this study, zinc oxide (ZnO, 99.0% purity) in 5.0% amount was added as an antibacterial component to borosilicate glass batch by reducing the amounts of SiO 2 , CaO, and MgO. Zinc oxide was added in borosilicate glass and glass ceramic composition in this study.…”

“…Bacterial infections are treated with different types of antibiotics, which are becoming challenging day by day, because of increased resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics . Therefore, the glass industry accelerated the investigations on glass materials with enhanced antibacterial properties. Many ingredients like copper, silver, zinc, titanium oxide, etc. have been used for such purpose. , …”

“…[3][4][5] Self-disinfecting surfaces are an alternative solution to the use of disinfectants for reducing microbial activity; different strategies have been proposed for anti-bacterial applications: for instance, coating the glass surfaces with a layer containing active eluting agents such as silver, copper, tungsten or zinc nanoparticles, or introducing silver directly to the glass composition. 3,[6][7][8][9][10][11] Most prominently, Ag + release from the glass surface is a practical method to prevent microbial activity 1,12,13 . While introducing silver to the glass composition significantly increases the production cost, covering the glass surface with silvercontaining coatings, using, for example, sol-gel methods, is economically favorable.…”
