The study was carried out to determine the economic assessment of lemon-based agroforestry systems established in the Madhupur Sal forest during the period from May 2017 to September 2018. The study selected five lemon-based agroforestry systems viz. Lemon-Mango-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Banana-Aroid, Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Mango-Turmeric-Red amaranth and Lemon-Litchi-Papaya-Banana along with three replications having 0.13 ha area for each sample plot. The control plots (without lemon plant) for each of the five lemon-based agroforestry systems were also selected. In order to calculate the economic profitability of respective agroforestry systems as well as sole cropping performance, data related to incurred cost, total yield and income from lemon and crop components were collected through practical observation, key informant interview and focus group discussion. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) and land equivalent ratio (LER) for each of the selected agroforestry systems were also determined. From the study, it has been found that all of the lemon-based agroforestry systems were profitable than their sole cropping in respect of income, BCR, and LER. The net profit (460032 Tk/ha) indicated that the Lemon-Litchi-Papaya-Banana based agroforestry systems were financially more profitable followed by Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Banana-Aroid, Lemon-Mango-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Mango-Turmeric-Red amaranth based agroforestry systems. But the BCR and LER (3.515 and 1.73) revealed that Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Banana-Aroid based agroforestry system was more productive followed by Lemon-Litchi-Papaya-Banana, Lemon-Mango-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Pineapple-Papaya-Ginger, Lemon-Mango-Turmeric-Red amaranth based agroforestry systems. Prior to considering the obtained results from the study, it can be concluded that lemon-based agroforestry systems are more profitable than the cultivation of sole cropping. The study was carried out in the Madhupur Sal forest of Bangladesh to assess the economic profitability and soil nutrient status of Eucalyptus and Gamar based agroforestry practices based on the data from July 2017 to September 2018. Four different agroforestry practices viz. Eucalyptus-Akashmoni-Teak-Papaya-Ginger-Pineapple-Banana, Eucalyptus-Akashmoni-Turmeric-Banana, Gamar-Akashmoni-Acacia hybrid-Goraneem-Pineapple-Papaya-Banana and Gamar-Akashmoni-Acacia hybrid-Kalomegh along with their non-agroforestry practices (NAFPs) (except tree) having 0.2 ha plot area were selected through literature review, focus group discussion and practical observation. In order to calculate the economic profitability of respective agroforestry practices as well as NAFPs, data related to incurred cost, gross return, net return from tree and crop components, soil samples for chemical analysis were collected from each plot. The benefit-cost ratio (BCR) and land equivalent ratio (LER) for each of the selected agroforestry practices were determined. The results of the study showed that all the selected agroforestry practices were more profitable than their NAFPs. The net return, BCR, and LER (707110 Tk/ha, 3.87 and 1.76, respectively) indicated that the Eucalyptus-Akashmoni-Teak-Papaya-Ginger-Banana-Pineapple based agroforestry practice was economically more profitable followed by Gamar-Akashmoni-Acacia hybrid-Goraneem-Pineapple-Papaya-Banana, Eucalyptus-Akashmoni-Turmeric-Banana, and Gamar-Akashmoni-Acacia hybrid-Kalomegh based agroforestry practices. Moreover, soil nutrient status like organic matter (%), total N (%), available P (ppm) and exchangeable K (meq/100g soil) of all of the selected agroforestry practices were mostly higher than their non-agroforestry practices. Therefore, it can be concluded that agroforestry practices are economically more profitable than the cultivation of their sole cropping systems which also helps to reduce the use of chemical fertilizer.

Improvement of Farmers’ Livelihood through Choi Jhal (Piper chaba)-Based Agroforestry System: Instance from the Northern Region of Bangladesh

One of the most significant linchpins of the socioeconomic and livelihood milieu for rural farmers around the world is agroforestry. Several agroforestry practices are being employed by farmers in Bangladesh’s northern region, with Choi Jhal (Piper chaba)-based agroforestry being one of the most prevalent. Numerous researches have been conducted in different regions of Bangladesh to determine the potential livelihood for farmers who engage in diversified agroforestry, but hardly any comprehensive research has been carried out considering the aforementioned system as one of the most sustainable practices. To address this knowledge void, the present research was conducted in the Chinai union of Rajarhat Upazila in the Kurigram district of Bangladesh, surveying 105 Piper chaba farmers to assess the impact of this existing agroforestry system on their livelihood predicament. A mixed-method approach, including secondary data review, questionnaire survey, key informant interviews, focus group discussions and direct observations, were used for data collection and triangulation. To evaluate livelihoods and the problem severity, the Livelihood Improvement Index (LII) and the Problem Facing Index (FPI) were utilized, respectively. The findings demonstrate that the most suitable tree for Piper chaba cultivation is the betel nut (74.3%), and the majority (64.8%) of farmers have 41 to 90 Piper chaba plants. By strengthening farmers’ constant availability of food, fruit, timber, fodder, and fuelwood, this agroforestry system has markedly increased the sustainability of their livelihoods. This practice is thought to boost farmers’ livelihood capitals, with natural capital improving the most, while social capitals improve the least. However, eight major problems have been identified that farmers face while growing the crop and these must be remedied if different livelihood capitals are to be vastly improved. This research gives a full insight into the current Piper chaba production scenario and livelihood dynamics of local farmers, allowing some bold propositions to be formulated for further upgrading of their subsistence.
