Productivity enhancement in North American automotive industry

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify effective factors, their impact, and find estimation models of the most well-known productivity measurement, hours-per-vehicle (HPV), in the automotive industry in North American manufacturing plants. Design/methodology/approach Data used in this study were from North American plants that participated in the Harbour’s survey from 2002 to 2006. Data are synthesized using a uniform methodology from information supplied by the plants and supplemented with plant v… Show more

“…From the index of Gentan-i, all the elements of each vehicle (from raw material to final processes) in the whole company can be controlled and detect the waste/muda. The concept of Gentan-i is similar understanding of hours-per-vehicle (Weyer, 2011), vehicle-per-employee (Abolhassani and Jaridi, 2016), job-per-hour (El-Khalil, 2015), or man-hour-per-unit (Kazaz et al ., 2016). The Gentan-i purpose is managing production cost and to maintain the ideal cost or standard cost. Process balance/Heijunka: is a pre-condition of JIT (Ohno, 1988), a key element of the TPS (Korytkowski et al ., 2013), which leveling of production by both production volume and product mix (Liker, 2004).…”

“…There are many automakers and scholars are attempting to improve the industry's productivity. Several methods and techniques which can improve automakers productivity have been defined including enterprise resource planning, Lean manufacturing, SixSigma, information technology, total quality management (Abolhassani and Jaridi, 2016). The term “Production Efficiency Improvement” or “PEFF” was used in Toyota from 2012 to hand-down the Toyota's Know-how regarding how to keep Toyota's shop-floor “flexible to change” and “continuously improvement” and upgrade the manpower efficiency in the whole corporation (Toyota Motor Corporation, 2012).…”

“…En la actualidad el estudio de la productividad en las industrias representa de las áreas más importantes de investigación para los especialistas. Por otro lado se ha demostrado que la producción representa el eslabón fundamental en la cadena de suministros de las empresas, especialmente de la industria automotriz (Abolhassani & Jaridi, 2016).…”

“…Productivity is the main measure of operational efficiency in manufacturing operations, as it allows to evaluate the usage of internal resources and benchmark performance, thus serving as a basis for management decisions (Coelli et al, 2005;Abolhassani and Jaridi, 2016;Abolhassani et al, 2019). However, an increase in productivity may negatively impact performance and jeopardize long-term results related to flexibility and the ability to innovate (Benner and Tushman, 2003;Utterback and Abernathy, 2018).…”
