Profile Analysis of Fatty Acids of Tengkawang (Shorea Sumatrana) Oil Using GC-MS and Antibacterial Activity

Abstract: The Shorea sumatrana (tengkawang) plant is endemic to Indonesia, especially in Kalimantan and Sumatera regions, which produces chemical diversity especially as a natural drugs. Specific aims to investigate both the profile analysis of fatty acid and antibacterial potential of tengkawang oil. The extract of tengkawang oil was carried out using the soxhlet extraction method. The profile analysis of fatty acid was verified by GC-MS and the antibacterial activity was evaluated using disc-diffusion method. The prof… Show more

“…Antibacterial activity is divided into four categories: weak category if the diameter of the inhibition zone is <5 mm, moderate 5-10 mm, strong 10-20 mm, and powerful >20 mm (Riski et al, 2020). These criteria classified nutmeg leaf oil's antibacterial activity and nutmeg leaf's ethanol extract against S. aureus bacteria as very strong.…”

“…In inhibition of bacterial cell protein synthesis, generally antibacterial, will cause misread the code in mRNA by tRNA (translation and transcription barrier of genetic material) such as aminoglycosides, also inhibit following the same inhibition pathway. Generally, antibacterial compounds will bind to one of the components that play a role in the synthesis stage [29]. The clinical use of synthetic antibacterials has disadvantages such as high toxicity, high cost, and their use often leads to the emergence of resistance.…”

“…The content of secondary metabolites of Tapak Kuda leaves such as flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, tannins, and anthraquinones have been formulated antibacterial gel [46]. Tagetas erecta leaves contain flavonoid and phenolic as bioactive compounds, that have antibacterial activity [13,19,21,[24][25][26][28][29][30][31][32][33][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][43][44][45][46][47]. In addition, it is also known that the Ceremai plant (Phyllanthus acidus (L.) is useful as an antibacterial which plays a role in preventing infection [46].…”

“…Food can provide a source of oil and protein. Oil sources can be obtained from plants such as Tengkawang (Shorea Sumatrana) (Riski, Maulana, Permana, Lestari, & Tarigan, 2020), and from animals it can be obtained from seafood. Seafood provides oil and also protein.…”
