Introduction: Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that tends to diagnosed at an advanced stage with low survival and prognosis rate. One of the factors that may play a role in progressivity and metastasis of tumor is overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is a key role in tumor angiogenesis. Objective: This study aims to learn the expression of VEGF in NPC with Undifferentiated Carcinoma type and to learn the association pf VEGF Expression with tumor stage of NPC Method: This is a cross-sectional study performed in ENT-HNS Department of ENT-HNS of Udayana University/Sanglah Hospital. The sample was collected by consecutive nonprobability sampling, starting from January 2016. NPC patients underwent Histopathologic examination from a nasopharyngeal biopsy. The result is Undifferentiated Carcinoma. VEGF expression analyzed by red-brown stained cytoplasm. Data were analyzed by Spearman's Correlation Test Chi-Square test, and Paired Sample t-Test. Result: VEGF positive Expression was found in 27 of 28 (96.4%) Undifferentiated Carcinoma type of NPC cases. VEGF overexpression was found in 23 of 28 (82.4%) Undifferentiated Carcinoma type of NPC cases.There is significant correlation found between tumor stage and VEGF expression (p<0.05). Conclusion: From the research, it could conclude that there is significant correlation between tumor stage and VEGF Expression.

Article InfoIntroduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a high incidence rate in southern China and Southeast Asia and a high rate of metastasis in head and neck cancer. NPC is a squamous cell carcinoma that grows from the surface of the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. E-cadherin is known as a tumor suppressor protein and the loss of this expression in tumor cells is related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition that occurs during tumor development and metastasis. Objective: To determine the relationship between E-cadherin expression and clinical stage in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods: An analytical study with a cross-sectional study design, the number of samples was 30 patients with NPC who underwent immunohistochemical examination on KNF paraffin block. Result: Overexpression of E-cadherin was found in T1 and T2 of 15 subjects (100%). The overexpression of Ecadherin was found in lymph node N2 and N3 of 19 subjects (95%). The overexpression of E-cadherin was found in the histopathological type of Non-Keratinizing Squamous Cell Carcinoma of 24 subjects (96%). The overexpression of E-cadherin was found at an advanced stage of 26 subjects (100%). Conclusion: No significant association was found between E-cadherin expression and tumor size (p=1.000), lymph node metastasis (p=1.000), histopathological type (p=1.000) and tumor stage (p=0.133).

BACKGROUND:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is uncommon and usually diagnosed at the advanced stage. A subfamily of mitogen-activated protein kinase which is called p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) involved in response to stress, and plays an important role in cell regulation. There is a suggestion that p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase could be a potential biomarker to determine the clinical stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.AIM:The aim of this study is for observing and analysing the correlation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase expression in regards to nasopharyngeal carcinoma patient’s clinical stage.METHODS:This study involved 126 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients admitted to Haji Adam Malik General Hospital.RESULTS:The result of this study indicates that nasopharyngeal carcinoma mostly found in the age group 41-60 years, male, non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, and stage IV group. In immunohistochemistry evaluation, most of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase overexpressed in non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, T3-T4, N2-N3 and clinical stage III-IV. Spearman’s test for categorical correlation yield p-value of < 0.001.CONCLUSION:In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase expression and the clinical stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
