Profiling the Cytokines in Gingival Crevicular Fluid Using a Cytokine Antibody Array

Abstract: In this study, we detected several cytokines in GCF using a cytokine antibody array system, including both inflammatory cytokines and various growth factors. Therefore, periodontal disease may participate in the wound healing process and in tissue destruction via the inflammatory process. Our results suggest that the quantification of these cytokines in GCF provides useful information for the diagnosis of periodontal disease status.

“…IP-10 is a CXC chemokine that chemoattracts T lymphocytes and monocytes. Using a human cytokine Ab array detecting 36 cytokines, IP-10 was detected at significantly higher levels in the gingival crevicular fluid of periodontally diseased sites than in healthy sites (38). Also, cells producing increased amounts of IP-10 were observed in inflamed gingival tissue from periodontitis patients (39).…”

“…Infiltration by mononuclear cells is a major event in chronic inflammation such as that found in periodontitis and atherosclerosis. Levels of IL-8 and MCP-1 were reported to show an increase in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) [9][10][11]. It has been demonstrated that MCP-1 is synthesized in inflamed gingiva by vascular endothelial cells and mononuclear phagocytes [12].…”
