Prognosis in Head and Neck Cancer: Importance of Nutritional and Biological Inflammatory Status

Abstract: Objectives To determine the importance of nutritional status, social status, and inflammatory status in the prognosis of head and neck cancer. Study Design Single-center retrospective study of prospectively collected data. Setting Tertiary referral center. Methods Ninety-two consecutive patients newly diagnosed for cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract without metastases were assessed at time of diagnosis for several prognostic factors. Nutritional status was assessed by the nutritional risk index, social st… Show more

“… 29 , 34 Critical weight loss and malnutrition have been associated with impaired survival. 35 , 36 Consistent with other recommendations, 11 , 37 , 38 NC should be given before radiation and during every follow-up between baseline and end of RT when RT-related side effects usually appear; weight and nutritional status should be assessed by healthcare professionals on a regular basis once weight loss begins in order to maximum the benefits of NC.…”

“…Of interest is the role of inflammation, which is postulated to be influential in tumor progression and metastasis ( Singh et al, 2019 ). Recent studies have confirmed that various markers of the systemic inflammatory response, for example, the C-reactive Protein (CRP), Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), Lymphocyte to Monocyte Ratio (LMR), and Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), all correlate to the prognosis of a myriad of tumors such as high-grade glioma ( He et al, 2021b ), colorectal cancer ( Dagmura et al, 2021 ), head and neck cancer ( Saroul et al, 2021 ), oral squamous cell cancer ( Yamagata et al, 2021 ), and gastric cancer ( Liu et al, 2021 ). The latest evidence also suggests that a similar tumor-inflammation relationship exists for breast cancer, indicating that quantifying the inflammatory response may be useful in treating and prognosticating breast cancer ( Dong et al, 2021 ).…”

“…However, many important predictors had not been involved in the traditional staging system, such as pathological type, treatment method, age, gender, nerve invasion, nutrition-immune-in ammation-related factors, etc. Previous researchers have shown that nutritionrelated factors had great affection for the prognosis of patients with head and neck cancer [9,10]. Miao-Fen Chen et al [11] found that malnutrition was associated with poor prognosis in patients with head and neck cancer, and adequate nutritional supplementation can improve the prognosis associated with augmented anticancer immunity.…”
