Prognostic scoring models in parotid gland carcinoma

Abstract: Background The aim was to identify prognostic factors and test three prognostic scoring models that predicted the risk of recurrence in patients with parotid gland carcinoma. Methods All Danish patients with parotid gland carcinoma, treated with curative intent, from 1990 to 2015 (n = 726) were included. Potential prognostic factors were evaluated using Cox regression and competing risk analyses. The concordance of each prognostic model was estimated using Harrel's C index. Results The study population consist… Show more

“…The mean incidence of parotid cancer in Thuringia was 0.94/100.000/year. This lies in the range reported for other countries like Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and the U.S.A. 17,[37][38][39] The mean incidence of patients with parotic cancer and preoperative and/or permanent postoperative facial nerve dysfunction was 0.27/100.000/ year. This means for Germany, a country with 83 million habitants, that about 219 new cases per year of treated parotid cancer with permanent facial nerve dysfunction have to be expected.…”

“…Population‐based data on parotid cancer are sparse. Based on cancer registry data, there are a few actual studies all focusing on oncological outcome 14–17 . The present study is, to our knowledge, the first to present data on facial function outcome in a population‐based setting.…”
