Prognostic significance of the combination of preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet in patients with gastric carcinoma: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Nutritional and immune status is important to the prognosis of patients with gastric carcinoma (GC). Here, we evaluated the prognostic significance of the combination of preoperative hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet (HALP) in patients with GC. From January 2005 to December 2011, 1332 patients with GC who underwent gastrectomy were randomly divided into the training (n = 888) and the validation sets (n = 444) by X-tile according to the sample size ratio 2:1. The cut-point of HALP was 56.8 and the pa… Show more

“…The patients who underwent radical gastrectomy from 8/2012 to 12/2013 were retrospectively collected from the Gastric Cancer Patient Registry Database in West China Hospital [ 40 42 ]. The eligible patients were proven to have stage II and III gastric cancer via postoperative pathological examination.…”

“…[46][47][48][49][50][51]. To date, numerous traditional systemic in ammation markers have been reported, including the Glasgow Prognostic Score [52,53] based on plasma components, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [54,55] derived from the number of blood cells, the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio [56,57], CRP-to-albumin ratio [58], and the PNI [27,59] based on serum albumin levels and lymphocyte counts. Most of these markers are based on blood cell counts, serum protein level measurement, and the ratios derived from these parameters.…”

“…Many studies have indicated that a scoring system or nomogram predicts long-term survival after a gastectomy [2][3][4][5]18], and they did so by identifying postoperative clinicopathological factors. Only a few studies have evaluated preoperative prognostic factors for predicting long-term outcomes in patients with gastric cancer, such as the Modified Glasgow Prognostic Score, C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio, blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte-tomonocyte ratio, albumin-to-globulin ratio, and combination of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocytes, and platelets [19][20][21][22][23][24]. These scoring systems are useful predictors; however, our risk calculator mostly included these prognostic factors, and no other risk scoring system predicted both short-and longterm outcomes better than our risk model.…”
