Programmable low noise amplifier with active-inductor load

Abstract: A common gate CMOS low noise amplifier (LNA) with an activeinductor load is presented. For large inductance values, an onchip passive inductor requires considerable silicon area and it is quality-factor (Q) limited; a situation that can be rendered as impractical. Hence, the purpose of this work is to seek the possibility of using active inductors in RF circuits as substitutes for passive ones. Moreover, an active inductor opens avenues for programmability, e.g. it is possible to attain an amplifier with a pro… Show more

“…In Figure 4A, the filter consists of a regulated cascode active inductor and a capacitor Co, which is as the same topology to what is shown in Figure 3. The regulated cascode active inductor may enlarge the equivalent inductance [ 11], and reduce the frequency of the main pole as what has been discussed above.…”

“…Unlike its passive counterpart, active inductor does not generate or receive real magnetic field and thus exhibits better immunity to EMI. In terms of these advantages, the active inductor has been applied extensively in RF designs, such as RF filter [11], oscillator [12], PLL [13], LNA [14] and quadrature hybrid coupler [15].…”

“…Active inductors can be used in the input matching network or at the load side [12]. There are four different input matching techniques used in the design of narrow band CMOS LNA are discussed in [11], they are SID, PLC, SL and PL methods.…”
