Programmable Paper-Based Microfluidic Devices for Biomarker Detections

Abstract: Recent advanced paper-based microfluidic devices provide an alternative technology for the detection of biomarkers by using affordable and portable devices for point-of-care testing (POCT). Programmable paper-based microfluidic devices enable a wide range of biomarker detection with high sensitivity and automation for single- and multi-step assays because they provide better control for manipulating fluid samples. In this review, we examine the advances in programmable microfluidics, i.e., paper-based continuo… Show more

“…Apart from LFIA, paper-based microuidic devices have been experiencing rapid development in recent years, and their feasibility in portable detection of muscle injuries has been unfolded. 15,[66][67][68][69][70] For example, Gao et al developed a vertical paper-based analytical devices that realized automated ELISA for Myo detection for muscle injury diagnostics. 71 In this design, the intensity of color produced in the reaction area is used as a metric to evaluate Myo concentrations with a limit of detection of 32 ng mL À1 .…”

“…The capillary is the driving force for fluid to move into the tube, and the velocity of the fluid is reduced as the fluid penetrates into the capillary. More detailed discussions can be found in other reports [11,12,44,45]. Fluid manipulation technology can be divided into passive and active methods according to the operation modes.…”

“…In response to the need of finding a low-cost and high-throughput fabrication method to produce miniaturized paper-based assays [37][38][39], we have developed an approach using a desktop pen plotter and technical pens ( Figure 1). A commercially available water-based hydrophobic solution with an added colorant for visualization of the printed pattern was used for plotting hydrophobic barriers.…”
