Progress and Outlook in Wind Energy Research

Abstract: Wind energy research plays a vital role in the possibility of the success story of wind energy as one of the most promising sustainable energy sources. This continuous process has been achieved from the era of small wind turbines to the current Multi-WM standard and beyond. In this editorial paper, the progress and future outlook of wind energy research in two main aspects are discussed. The first aspect is in the area of wind turbine design and computations which covers engineering modeling and high-fidelity … Show more

“…The early design phases of the turbine designs usually adopt IEC [4] or DNV [5] standards or both, where the incorporation of the farm effects is not taken into account in detailed manner due the dependence on the layout. Despite that, there is a growing need to incorporate the wind farm effects in time accurate simulations in wind turbine design process to enable a correct estimation of the wind turbine loads and performance [6].…”

“…The success story of wind energy is inextricably linked to its long history in research and development in many aspects. This includes ongoing efforts spent on improving the reliability of wind turbine designs and site assessments [33]. The design of wind power plants (PLTB) has among others been carried out for the Savonius vertical axis wind turbine type [29]- [32], [34] - [37] and horizontal axis wind turbine [31][36] - [42].…”
