Progress in low dose health risk research

Abstract: People are more often exposed to low as opposed to high doses of ionising radiation (IR). Knowledge on the health risks associated with exposures to ionising radiation above 100 mGy is quite well established, while lower dose risks are inferred from higher level exposure information (ICRP). The health risk assessments are mainly based on epidemiological data derived from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, medical exposure studies and follow-up studies after nuclear accidents. For the estimation of l… Show more

“…Second, hp-MSCs were exposed to only 5 Gy at a high dose rate (1 Gy/min) which is equivalent to the daily dose generally used in clinical radiotherapy for cancers. As the biological effects on cells vary greatly depending on the dose and dose rate of radiation [ 50 , 51 ], it is necessary to evaluate the quantity and quality of EVs from MSCs by exposing the cells to different doses and dose rates of radiation. Third, we analyzed only miRNAs, but radiation exposure may also change other components such as lipids, proteins, and lncRNAs in EVs.…”

“…The quality and quantity of DNA damage is assessed in terms of the radiation type and dose [ 28 ]. For example, high and low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation induce different spectra and qualities/complexity of DNA lesions, because of the differences in radiation track structures [ 29 ].…”

“…Radiosensitivity is any enhanced tissue or cell reaction after a subject has been exposed to IR when compared to the majority of other "normal" responding individuals [13,14]. The reactions include inflammation, fibrosis, cardiovascular illness, cataracts, and cognitive decline [15]. Individual radiosensitivity can be applied as component of personalized medicine in RT.…”
