PROGRESS IN UREMIC TOXIN RESEARCH: Beta2‐Microglobulin

Abstract: Among the uremic toxins in the "middle molecule" range, beta2-microglobulin (beta2-M) is certainly one of the most frequently studied compounds. Its serum level increases with the progression of chronic kidney disease, to reach very high concentrations in patients with end-stage kidney disease. It is the major protein component of dialysis-related amyloidosis, a dramatic complication which results from high extracellular concentration and posttranslational modification of beta2-M and a number of other promoter… Show more

“…Dialysis Related Amyloidosis (DRA) is a pathological state afflicting patients suffering from kidney failure treated by long-term hemodialysis, related to inefficient b2m catabolism. 2,3 Under such pathological conditions the concentration of circulating b2m increases by a factor of 10-50, 2,4 leading to b2m…”

“…The accumulation of polymerized β 2 -microglobulin during the years of dialysis therapy leads to severe bone and soft tissue damage. 14,15 Two different dialysis modalities for solute transport across artificial kidney membranes are possible: diffusion and convection. Diffusive-based HD modality provides good removal of small molecules, but removal of middleand large-size uremic toxins is limited even when highflux membranes are used.…”

“…Serum b2-microglobulin seems to be an inconstant indicator of dialy-166 Bellini, Paparella: Dialysis arthropathy and the biochemical database sis-related arthropathy. In our study, this common arthropathy dialysis-related indicator, b2-microglobulin (15,16), was si milar in the two groups.…”
