Abstract: This article explores both the prerequisites and barriers of perspective transformation in the context of two Eastern European societies as examples of post-totalitarian states. Although personal cognitive development is considered as an outcome of perspective transformation, I will demonstrate that certain manifestations of cognitive development as well as autonomous thinking are rather preconditions for engaging in the critical reflection and rational discourse necessary for perspective transformation. “…The transformative learning theory (TLT; Mezirow, 1978) has witnessed significant recognition and contribution to higher education since its emergence in late 20th century (Kloubert, 2019). The theory that evolved from the seminal works of Jack Mezirow—on the learning experiences of adult re-entry women coming back to school after some hiatus—provides explanations to how adult learners learn by critically reflecting on and transforming their uncritically held assumptions and perspectives (Mezirow, 2000).…”

“…And, an understanding of TL (especially of the broader range of TL scholarship that has evolved over the past few decades) can aid educators in supporting learners through such a challenging process. Examples of this from our own work include studying the psychosocial transition of breast cancer survivors (Hoggan, 2014) and the process of learning how to live and participate in a democracy after decades of living under a totalitarian regime (Kloubert, 2020). Also, recognizing that when students from historically underserved backgrounds (e.g., poverty, immigration) attend community college in the United States, the experience is often highly disorienting and requires forms of learning and adaptation that can usefully be understood through TL theory (Hoggan, 2019b).…”
