Abstract: The Social Identity Approach to Health holds that groups provide us with a sense of meaning and belonging, and that these identity processes have a significant positive impact on our health and wellbeing. Typically, research drawing from the social identity approach with adolescents has focused on the benefits of existing group memberships. “…For instance, the 10-day Spirit of Adventure experience starts each day with a 6 am swim in the ocean. When shared with a group of peers, such emotionally intense and often dysphoric experiences increase a sense of group belonging and also predict long-term increases in self-esteem and resilience (Scarf, Hayhurst, et al, 2017;Scarf, Kafka, et al, 2018;Scarf, Moradi, et al, 2016), with stronger effects in the short-term for at-risk youth (Arahanga-Doyle et al, 2019;Koni et al, 2019).…”

“…Resiliency is often defined as the ability to bounce back after adversity (Koni et al, 2019). Another way of looking at this personality trait is devising new, different, or alternatively effective methods to function despite highly adverse situations (Jackson-Cherry & Erford, 2018).…”

“…It may also be worth exploring this type of intervention through a social psychology framework; Praharso et al (2017) suggest a SIMIC model of health can be used to understand the loss of social identity and subsequent decrease in wellbeing as a result of a life stressful event (such as starting university). Koni et al (2019) develop this idea within an applied setting, by exploring the impact of providing adolescents with a new group (i.e., a new social identity) on psychological resilience. Their work illustrated that creating a new social identity through an active group intervention worked best more vulnerable adolescents (similar to those who took part in this study).…”
