Pronounced Electrochemical Amphotericity of a Fused Donor–Acceptor Compound: A Planar Merge of TTF with a TCNQ‐Type Bithienoquinoxaline

Abstract: Narrowing the gap: A compactly fused π‐conjugated molecule combines a high‐lying HOMO with a low‐lying LUMO (Eox−Ered=0.52 eV) and a fairly low‐lying LUMO+1 on the bridging unit, giving rise to strong optical charge‐transfer transitions. A facile electron transfer has been observed by EPR and NMR spectroscopies.

“…This gap is only slightly larger than the optical band gap of 2.85 eV determined from the intersection of the normalized absorption and emission spectra, and therefore these values are more similar than is typically observed 19a,b. Assuming in the simplest case that these energy levels are indeed responsible for the observed oxidation and reduction,19c using the electrochemically determined HOMO–LUMO gap and the empirical relationship E HOMO =(−1.4 E onset (ox1)−4.6) eV,19d we can also estimate the HOMO and LUMO energies as −6.0 and −3.2 eV, respectively, relative to the vacuum level. The position of the HOMO will make hole injection from most common hole‐injection electrodes (poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) or indium tin oxide) quite difficult.…”

“…2 Herein, we introduce a highly conjugated polymer, TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane), with plenty of cyano groups. 19 Many works have conrmed that TCNQ has strong pp stacking interactions with carbon nanotubes and graphene. The conjugative p-electron structures of polymer hybridized photocatalysts exhibit elevated photoactivity because of rapid photogenerated charger transfer.…”
