For the implementation of commercial cultivation areas of heliconias, it is important to use pathogen-free seedlings and maintain the inherent characteristics of the hybrid plants to be cultivated. Thus, the objective of this work was to study a protocol for the in vitro propagation of the Heliconia bihai x Heliconia caribaea 'Jacquinii' hybrid and evaluate the plants survival rate during the acclimatization stage. Buds (explants) up to 5 mm long, originated from plantlets established in vitro were transferred to a ½ MS culture medium added by 0,5 mg L-1 of NAA combined with concentrations of 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 and 2.5 mg L-1 of 6-BA. Each treatment included 10 replications with one explant by replication, distributed at completely randomized design. After 100 days of growth under controlled conditions, rate of multiplication; plantlets length (cm) and cluster fresh and dry weight (g) were evaluated. Remaining plantlets were acclimatized in coconut fiber substrate to assess survival rate. In regards to the number of buds, the largest number of buds (four buds per explant) was verified in the absence of 6-BA, whereas in the presence of 6-BA, two to three buds per explant were observed. No significant differences were observed among 6-BA concentrations for plantlets length and cluster fresh weight. Plantlets survival rate during the acclimatization stage was 100%. Results from this study show that the MS culture medium added by 0.5 mg L-1 of NAA can be used for the in vitro propagation of the H. bihai x H. caribaea 'Jacquinii' hybrid

Ethnobotanical knowledge and practices are dynamic and they change as they are transferred and appropriated by people who are adapting to new surroundings and changing environments. Using tifey, a multispecies drink, as a case study, we discuss the changes that emigration brought about related to tifey, and the processes that determined these changes. Tifey is a Haitian drink prepared by soaking Artemisia absinthium and other plants in rum or aguardiente. It probably had its origin in the adoption of the absinthe-based liquor used by French settlers and troops during the colonial period. Haitians progressively added culturally relevant flavorings and medicinal plants to this drink, and differentiated its production and use for medicinal, medicinal food, ritual (religious and social), and economic purposes. When Haitians migrated to Cuba, they brought tifey with them, but over the course of the twentieth century its use declined and its composition changed due to sociocultural factors such as the dissolution of Haitian settlements, and to ecological factors such as difficulty in cultivation and/or procurement of A. absinthium in the new environment.

Sosa-Rodríguez et al (2009), mencionan que el cultivar Heliconia standleyi Macbride se puede propagar en medio líquido mediante desinfestación con hipoclorito de sodio (-NaOCl) al 2% durante 20 min, medio de cultivo suplementado con 6-BAP (Bencilaminopurina 2,0 mg • litro -1 ) y ácido indolacético (AIA 0,65 y 1,3 mg • litro -1 ), siempre y cuando los explantes tengan un tamaño mayor a 1.0 cm en medio semilíquido. El coeficiente de multiplicación después del subcultivo fue de 4,6 explantes / meristemos.…”

Background: Heliconias are commercially important flowers due to its abundance of shapes, sizes, and colors. In Mexico, however, this ornamental crop is not considered in the statistical yearbook of agricultural production. In addition, there is no research regarding the context of tropical floriculture. Objective: To explore all scientific contributions related to the cultivation of heliconias. Methodology: A bibliographic search was conducted in Redalyc, SciELO, Scopus and Google Scholar with the key word “heliconia.” After cleansing the database of similar results, we generated a final compilation of 42 papers, which were then subject to an analysis of textual content by using Nvivo 12 Plus software to identify the contributions by means of the following categories of analysis: Production, post-harvesting, and commercialization. The species of heliconias were also identified. Results: The content analysis showed that 73.71% of all scientific contributions correspond to the production category, 12.5 % to post-harvesting, and 13.88% to commercialization. For each category, different topics which guide the contributions were identified. We found 43 species of heliconias that were used for research purposes in the three categories of analysis. Implications: The analysis was limited only to scientific contributions explored. An analysis that considered other sources of information could have strengthened this analytical exercise. Conclusion: The scientific contributions regarding the cultivation of heliconias are mainly oriented to the production category, which demonstrates that the focus is on the improvement of the production process. On the contrary, the contributions on post-harvesting and commercialization are incipient; therefore, it is important to address these topics in future research.
