Properties and response of composite material with spheroidal superelastic shape memory alloy inclusions subject to three-dimensional stress state

Abstract: This communication illustrates the method of evaluation of the stiffness tensor and the stress-strain relationship of a particulate composite material with randomly distributed spheroidal superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) inclusions that is subject to three-dimensional stresses. The Mori-Tanaka homogenization technique in conjunction with the Tanaka phenomenological SMA theory is applied to develop relations between the properties of the composite material and the applied stresses. In addition, the composi… Show more

“…A comprehensive review on this issue is available in [7]. In [8] Birman illustrated a two-step approach in the strength and stiffness analyses of fibre reinforced particulate-matrix composites obtained through a generalization of available micromechanical solutions available for three-phase materials. The numerical analysis shows that adding stiff particles to the matrix results in a significant enhancement of the transverse strength and stiffness.…”

“…13b). Birman [57,58] developed a similar numerical scheme to investigate the effect of randomly distributed SMA spheroidal particles on the effective thermomechanical properties [57] and stress-strain loop reflecting hysteresis of fiber-reinforced polymer composites and on the stress states of SMA particle reinforced MMCs [58]. The Mori-Tanaka homogenization technique was used at both levels to develop relations between the properties of the composite material and the applied stresses.…”

“…Similar methods has been used in [5], [6], to model the structural effects of precipitates in polycrystalline SMAs. In addition, in [7]- [9] Mori-Tanaka based micromechanical approaches has been adopted to predict the inelastic behavior in SMA composites.…”
