Properties of the Phonon Gas in Ultrathin Membranes at Low Temperature

Abstract: We analyze heat conduction by phonons in ultrathin membranes by constructing a new theoretical framework which implies a crossover from a bulk three-dimensional phonon distribution into a quasitwo-dimensional distribution when the temperature is lowered. We calculate the corresponding changes in the relevant thermodynamic quantities. At the end we make a comparison to experimental data.[S0031-9007(98)07273-1]

“…In such thin membranes phonon propagation is essentially two dimensional. The condensation of the phonon gas into lower dimensions in ultrathin membranes was also theoretically discussed ͑Anghel et al, 1998;Anghel and Manninen, 1999;Kuhn et al, 2004͒. The self-suspended bridges improve thermal isolation of the dielectric platform from the heat bath ͑Leivo and Pekola, 1998͒.…”

“…The phonon wavelength depends on temperature, and when the film thickness is of the same order of magnitude as the phonon wavelength, the dimensionality of the phonon system changes. 30 The acoustic mismatch between the film and the substrate also affects the dimensionality of the phonons in the film. Generally a good coupling between the phonons in the substrate and in the film eliminates the low dimensionality effect.…”

“…When it is used as a radiation detector, to reach the sensitivity required by astronomical observations, the working temperature of the device should be in the range of hundreds of mK or below 1,10,11 . At such temperatures the phonon gas in the layered structure formed by the normal metal island and the supporting membrane undergoes a dimensionality cross-over from a three-dimensional (3D) gas (at higher temperatures) to a quasi two-dimensional (2D) gas (at lower temperatures) [12][13][14] .…”
