“…However, they are in accord with several historical papers Table 3. published on vaccination against furunculosis. In spite of the successful pioneer oral vaccination experiment by Du# (1942), several authors subsequently failed to protect fish by the oral route (Snieszko & Friddle, 1949;Krantz et al, 1964;Spence et al, 1965;Klontz & Anderson, 1970;Hara et al, 1976;Udey & Fryer, 1978). Protection reported after immersion vaccination against furunculosis has been low to moderate Adams et al, 1988) or has been obtained in field experiments where the challenge was low (Palmer & Smith, 1980;Rodgers, 1990).…”

“…The first report in English was in the year 1942 by Duff ( 1942 ) who reported protection against Aeromonas salmonicida in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , by oral administration and parenteral inoculation. Since the 1940s when the first fish vaccine was used for preventing diseases (Snieszko and Friddle 1949 ), many vaccines which have a huge impact on reducing the bacterial and viral pathogenic diseases in fishes have been developed (Gudding and Goodrich 2014 ).…”

“…It took more than 10 years (after Snieszko’s move to the USA) before he reconsidered this approach again for disease prevention. In 1949 he published a comparative study on prophylaxis of furunculosis (caused by Aeromonas salmonicida ) in brook trout by oral immunization and the antibiotic sulfamerazine [ 19 ]. Unfortunately, the drug sulfamerazine gave better protection than oral vaccination.…”
