The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on family relationships, as several families have lost family members due to COVID-19 pandemic and become physically and emotionally estranged due to lockdown measures and critically economic periods. Our study contrasted two hypotheses: (1) family functioning changed notably before and after the COVID-19 pandemic initiation in terms of cohesion, flexibility, communication and satisfaction; (2) balanced families have a greater capacity to strictly comply with quarantine (i.e., social confinement), compared to unbalanced families. We performed an observational study comparing family functioning between two independent groups, evaluated before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru. A total of 7,980 participants were included in the study. For the first hypothesis, we found that, during the pandemic, families became more balanced in terms of cohesion (adjusted before-during mean difference or β1= 1.4; 95% CI [1.0–1.7]) and flexibility (β2= 2.0; 95% CI [1.6–2.4]), and families were less disengaged (β3= −1.9; 95% CI [−2.3 to −1.5]) and chaotic (β4= −2.9; 95% CI [−3.3 to −2.4]). Regarding the second hypothesis, we confirmed that families with balanced cohesion (adjusted prevalence ratio or aPR = 1.16; 95% CI [1.12–1.19) and flexibility (aPR = 1.23; 95% CI [1.18–1.27]) allowed greater compliance with quarantine restrictions; while disengaged (aPR = 0.91; 95% CI [0.88–0.93]) and chaotic families (aPR = 0.89; 95% CI [0.87–0.92]) were more likely to partially comply or not comply with the quarantine. Finally, family communication (aPR = 1.17; 95% CI [1.11–1.24]) and satisfaction (aPR = 1.18; 95% CI [1.11–1.25]) also played a role in favouring quarantine compliance. This new evidence enlightens the family systems theory while informing future interventions for improving compliance with quarantine measures in the context of social confinement.

Objective. To identify socio-academic and family functionality factors – communication, cohesion, and flexibility – as predictive stimuli of adaptive coping of nursing university students in the post-COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study with stratified random sampling, with participation by 416 Nursing students from a private university in Pereira (Colombia), who answered a self-completed sociodemographic characterization survey, the Olson et al., communication scale, FACES III scale to assess family cohesion and flexibility, and the Calixta Roy CAPS scale to assess coping and adaptation capacity. Binary logistic regression and Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit were performedto determine predictors of success, using SPSS v.26. Results. The profiles of the participants showed a higher proportion of women (78.4%), ages between 21 and 30 years (57.5%), young people who study and work (60.1%), and those who have an academic session on Friday and Saturday (67.5%). Nursing students perceive that their families communicate efficiently and satisfactorily (85.8%), have strong cohesion with a tendency towards attachment (73.6%) and flexibility, show a tendency towards chaos (70.7%) and have adaptive coping (48.5%). The success predictors for adaptive coping were female sex (p=0.007), academic session Friday and Saturday (p=0.042), occupation, study, and work (p=0.026), socioeconomic strata 4.5 and 6 (p=0.041), good or very good communication (p=0.001), balanced family cohesion (p =0.048), and balanced family flexibility (p=0.039). Conclusion. This study found that good family functionality and having adequate socioeconomic conditions were predictors of higher coping and adaptation capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic in the nursing students who participated in the study.

Objective: To determine the influence of family functioning and family communication as predictors of intimate partner violence in female university students who migrated internally to Metropolitan Lima in Peru. Material And Methods: Cross-sectional and predictive study, developed in a sample of n=310 young women, with an average age of 21 years, selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES-IV), the Family Communication Scale (FCS) and the Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) were used. Descriptive and inferential analyses were estimated for the relationship of variables, Pearson's coefficient and multiple linear regression to determine the prediction of intimate partner violence using SPSS v. 26. Results: We found significant inverse relationships between intimate partner violence and family communication, balanced cohesion, balanced flexibility and rigid flexibility. While the chaotic flexibility scale was directly related to intimate partner violence. Likewise, family communication and family functioning predict 13.1% of intimate partner violence, and as family communication increases, intimate partner violence decreases (β= -0.10; 95%CI: -0.16 to -0.03). Conclusion: Coming from families with balanced cohesion, rigid, balanced flexibility decrease the risk of being victims of intimate partner violence and dysfunctional family communication increases intimate partner violence predicting 13.1% of intimate partner violence. Further studies could increase the sample of rural and urban areas to confirm the approximation we report.
