Proportionale Analogie, paradigmatischer Ausgleich und Formerweiterung

Abstract: Traditionally three independent types of analogical change in inflectional paradigms are distinguished: proportional analogy, paradigmatic leveling and analogical extension. However, the investigation of the data reveals that out of these types only that of proportional analogy can be empirically verified, being supported by clear evidence from languages with well documented history. Moreover, as shown by data from Russian, Old High German dialects, Old Saxon, Old English, and Latin, even in the most secure ca… Show more

“…I therefore agree with Hill (2007: 97-106) in his preference for proportional analogy as the leading force in externalisation of morphemes and in his insistence (Hill 2007: 106 fn. 12) on the need to consider the paradigmatic environment of the forms in which externalisation takes place.…”

“…Besides, Koch’s (1996: 244–6) short reference to the change under inspection (he uses the term ‘reordering of morphemes’) does not add substantial improvement to Haspelmath’s work, with the exception of an example of the Chukchi verb paradigm which could be included among the examples of Mithun. Further observations may be found in van Loon (2005: 117–20) and in Hill (2007: 97–106), for which see sections 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5.…”

“…Fourth, the patterns of analogical levelling attested in Kiranti verb roots may be relevant to research on the general principles of analogical levelling (Hill 2007(Hill , 2014bJacques 2016a).…”

“…This means that observed developments are only insufficiently described in the most general terms, such as system pressure, while they should rather be understood in more specific terms of morphological analogy. For this latter concept see Hill (2007), Garrett (2008), Fertig (2013; 2015; 2016).…”
