Children start to engage in self‐serving deception from approximately 2½ years of age. This emerging self‐centered propensity toward the deliberate covering of truth is predicted by the child's degree of executive function and level of theory of mind. In contrast, existing studies on the emergence of other‐oriented lies point to a significant developmental lag—children begin to produce prosocial lies not prior to 3–4 years of age. What may account for such a lag? In this article, we review the recent literature and conclude that the existing cognitive account does not fully explain the developmental lag between self‐ and other‐serving deception. As an alternative, we propose that reputational concerns may drive the ontogeny of prosocial lies and account for their later emergence.

This article aims to review and debate the concept of lying and the variables associated with it, such as the age of its emergence in infancy, developmental patterns in a life cycle, motives for lying, consequences on social relationships and contextual and educational factors. The paradoxical nature of this behaviour is also emphasized because it can be accompanied by either prosocial or antisocial acts. The links with cognitive abilities, moral reasoning and moral action are also discussed. An understanding of the relationship between lying and antisocial behaviour and its developmental trends is pertinent to the prevention of damage to social relationships and several contemporary threats to democracy. The study concludes with considerations about the potential links between lying and moral development, and a discussion with a view to design educational programmes to promote honesty and responsibility as part of citizenship education in democratic societies. RESUMENEl objetivo de este artículo es revisar y debatir la noción de mentira y las variables asociadas a ella, como la edad en la que aparece en la infancia, los patrones evolutivos durante la vida, las razones por las que se miente, las consecuencias de la mentira en las relaciones sociales y otros factores contextuales y educativos. El carácter paradójico de este comportamiento se hace más prominente porque suele ir acompañado de acciones prosociales o antisociales. También se discuten sus vínculos con las habilidades cognitivas, el razonamiento moral y la acción moral. El conocimiento de la relación entre la mentira y el comportamiento antisocial, así como sus tendencias evolutivas, es importante en la prevención del perjuicio causado a las relaciones sociales y otras amenazas contemporáneas para la democracia. El creciente interés por la educación emocional en la infancia motivó este trabajo, que busca examinar los aportes de diversas investigaciones, a partir de una revisión sistemática de documentos indexados en Google Académico, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scielo y Dialnet. Se consideró un total de 204 documentos, los cuales se referencian en la construcción narrativa de este texto; sin embargo, con el ánimo de determinar su pertinencia y relevancia, se hizo uso de matrices de análisis de contenido documental, a partir de las cuales se dio prevalencia a 62 documentos (desde 1985 hasta 2021). Los resultados se presentan en 3 categorías de análisis, que a su vez guiaron la revisión: empatía y razonamiento moral, empatía y desarrollo infantil; empatía en el ámbito educativo. Dentro de las conclusiones, es posible afirmar que existe una tendencia a centrar esta clase de estudios en las conductas prosociales y disruptivas en el ámbito educativo, además de sus posibles acciones educativas; por otra parte, estos hallazgos permiten determinar futuras líneas de trabajo en torno a la educación emocional y la empatía en la infancia.
