Prospective comparison of thermometers used in very preterm infants

Abstract: We measured temperature on admission to the neonatal unit in a cohort of 54 very preterm infants. We measured rectal temperature with a digital thermometer (Microlife MT-1931) as the gold standard (MT-R). We also measured axillary temperature with the MT (MT-A), with the Welch Allyn SureTemp Plus 692 in ‘continuous’ (WAC) mode and in the default ‘predictive’ (WAP) mode. While MT-A and WAC frequently differed from MT-R by ≥0.3°C, they were both reasonably sensitive and specific for hypothermia (MT-R <36.5°C)… Show more

“…In total, 198 infants were randomly assigned; 99 (44 (44%) girls) to BEFORE and 99 (53 (54%) girls) to AFTER (figure 1). Their median (IQR) GA was 29 (27)(28)(29)(30)(31) vs 29 (27)(28)(29)(30)(31) weeks, and mean (SD) birth weight (BW) was 1206 (429) vs 1138 (419) g, respectively (table 1). The minimum GA and BW were 23 +1 weeks and 485 g, respectively.…”

“…The primary outcome was rectal temperature within the normal range (36.5°C–37.5°C)14 on admission to the NICU. Rectal temperature was measured on arrival to the NICU, while the infant was still in the transport incubator and in the PB, with a digital thermometer (Microlife MT-1931, Microlife AG, Widnau, Switzerland) that was validated to detect abnormal temperature in very preterm infants 29 30…”

“…Traditionell erfolgt die Erfassung der Körpertemperatur bei Neugeborenen mittels rektaler Temperaturmessung [3]. Bereits 1959 wurde insbesondere bei Frühgeborenen auf eine erhöhte Verlet zungsgefahr hingewiesen [4], jedoch sind derartige Verletzungen auch bei reifen Neugeborenen beschrieben [2,5] or, einem Winkel von etwa 30 Grad, eingeführt werden [4].…”
