Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Trial Comparing a Tissue Adhesive (Dermabond™) with Adhesive Strips (Steri-Strips™) for the Closure of Laparoscopic Trocar Wounds in Children

Abstract: Both tissue adhesives and adhesive strips are excellent "no needle" alternatives for the closure of laparoscopic port-site incisions in children. As regards cosmetic outcome, Steri-Strip™ wound closure seems to be the most suitable and is also the less expensive technique.

“…In paediatric surgery, Romero et al assessed the use of subcuticular suture and either cyanoacrylate glue or Steri‐Strips® in the closure of laparoscopic ports after laparoscopic appendectomy . A single case of SSI occurred in the Steri‐Strips® group—no significant difference was identified in the incidence of SSI.…”

“…The VAS is an instrument that yields a simple numerical quantification of subjective perceptions of satisfaction, ranging from 1 (worst possible) to 10 (best imaginable). This scale has been previously used for scoring the cosmetic results after wound closure . To our knowledge, very few studies asked participants to score their own cosmetic result using this validated visual analogue scale .…”

“…The debate remains open on the use of cyanoacrylates for closing surgical wounds. Based on the results of clinical trials, some researchers advocate their use, whereas others report better outcomes with conventional sutures . Nonetheless, most found no difference in the cosmetic outcome of wounds repaired using either method .…”
