Prostatic evaluation by transrectal sonography: criteria for diagnosis of early carcinoma.

Abstract: Over a 7-month period, from a total of 417 transrectal ultrasound (US) studies, 45 transperineal biopsies of the prostate were performed in the radiology department. Transrectal US guidance and local anesthesia were used. Twenty-two of 32 hypoechoic lesions, located within the peripheral zone tissue of the gland, were proved by histologic study to be cancerous. Hyperechoic lesions were all histologically benign hyperplasias. The patients experienced no major complications necessitating hospitalization or incre… Show more

“…This good sensitivity which is found in our study and in the literature is unfortunately counterbalanced by the different échographie patterns of prostatic carcinoma [ 1,6,13,14]. Malignant areas may appear hypoechoic, isoechoic or hyperechoic in relation with their volumes and their pathological aspects.…”

“…In the literature the results from transrectal ultrasonography in preoperative staging vary as much as those concerning the diagnosis. The evaluation of the extracapsular extension of the tumor by sonography is better than by digital rectal examination, especially con cerning the seminal vesicles [1,13,14,18,21].…”

“…In BPH 18 of 26 cases (69.20%) were found in the inner glandular followed by 5 12 in their study found that prostate carcinoma originates in the peripheral zone and as it enlarges it envelopes not only the periphery, but it also infiltrates into the central portion of the prostate. A study by Fred Lee et al 13 , prostate carcinoma was seen involving the peripheral zone in 68.75% cases.…”
