Protease Producers Predominate Cultivable Hydrolytic Bacteria Isolated from Liquid Biomedical Waste

Abstract: Hydrolytic bacteria are known for their crucial role in the bioconversion of organic matters mainly present in biomedical waste, making them advantageous in bioremediation. Analysis of abundance and colony diversity of culturable bacteria producing hydrolytic enzymes isolated from liquid biomedical waste of two different classes of hospitals in Semarang city, Central Java was carried out. Bacterial cultivation on nutrient agar slants resulted in total 26 viable colonies from inlet samples of Rumah Sakit Umum R… Show more

“…Enzyme activity can be influenced by activators (substances that increase enzyme activity) and inhibitors (substances that decrease enzyme activity). In accordance with the opinion of Ethica et al (2018), the reaction speed catalyzed by enzymes is strongly influenced by the material and the substrate concentration.…”

“…Bioprospecting bacteria to produce hydrolytic enzymes for bioremediation purposes has been done by some researchers. Ethica et al (2018b) isolated bacteria from the liquid biomedical waste with hydrolytic capability as protease producers (26 colonies), amylase producers (14 colonies), cellulose producers (13 colonies) and lipase producers (10 colonies). Some members from phylum of actinobacteria from the bacteria domain also being reported of its potency to produce hydrolytic enzyme from marine environments and shrimp culture pond sediments such as lipase, amylase, chitinase, pectinase, and ligninase enzymes which showing bioremediation potential in Penaeus monodon shrimp culture by significantly reducing Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) level (Babu et al 2018).…”

“…The bacteria were streaked over casein hydrolyzed media and cultured for 24 hours at 35˚C. A clear zone surrounding the growth suggests that the strains are proteolytically active (Ethica et al, 2018). There was a discernible difference in the size of the clearing zone for proteolytic activity.…”
