Protective effect of a polysaccharide from Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae on acute liver injury in mice

Abstract: A homogeneous polysaccharide was isolated and purified from Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (RAM) and named PRAM2. Its average molecular weight was 19.6×10(3)Da and it was composed of rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, glucose, mannose and galactose in a ratio of 1: 1.3: 1.5: 1.8: 2.1: 3.2. In vitro experiments confirmed that PRAM2 presented an obvious effect to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) (DPPH), superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical. In vivo experiments c… Show more

“…It was observed that marked small nodulation and enlargement occurred in CCl 4 ‐treated livers with related increases in liver weights (Han et al., ; Pinto, Duque, Rodríguez‐Galdón, Cestero, & Macías, ), but was also present in the CCl 4 control. However, a noticeable decrease in small nodule formations and hepatic enlargements, with a related significant decrease in liver weights were observed in all mice administered test substances compared with those of the CCl 4 control; BHe exerted the most favorable effect, followed by silymarin, BHj, and BHw.…”

“…Pinellia ternata , Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Poria cocos , licorice, cassia twig, and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae have been reported to possess anti-inflammatory effect [3241]. In addition, cassia twig and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, two main constituents of LGZD, also showed antioxidant, antiadipogenic, and antiobesity activities and modulation of the gut microbial distribution [40]. Therefore, although ECD and LGZGD may contain hundreds of different chemical compounds, their active ingredients responsible for improving IR and liver protective activities are still unclear.…”

“…Hydroxyl radicals are the most active oxygen species in the body [ 35 ]; they can easily pass through the cell membrane and can react with many biological molecules, such as proteins, DNA, lipids, etc., which can lead to cell death and induce various diseases [ 36 ]. It is important to survey the hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity of ASTFs.…”
