Protective effect of dietary perilla oil on allergic inflammation in asthmatic mice

Abstract: Perilla oil (PER) is rich in α‐linolenic acid (n‐3 fatty acid). To unravel the effects of dietary PER on allergic asthmatic inflammation, three kinds of dietary oil, including PER, corn oil (COR), and perilla compound oil (50% PER and 50% COR), were used for replacing the oil in an AIN76 feed consumed by ovalbumin (OVA)‐sensitized and challenged mice continuously for 5 wk. T‐helper type 1 lymphocyte (Th1)/T‐helper type 2 lymphocyte (Th2) and pro‐/anti‐inflammatory cytokines secreted by the cells from the airwa… Show more

“…12,14,15 It is also reported to improve allergic inflammation in mice. 16 Compared with the extensive use of PO used for edible purposes, its impact on various health aspects has not yet thoroughly analyzed. Furthermore, most of the studies related to polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) have focused on FO, which is used as an omega-3 fatty acid supplement.…”

“…The OVA-sensitized and challenged allergic asthmatic inflammation mouse model was established using OVA sensitization injected intraperitoneally (i. p .) and challenged with aerosolized-OVA to induce stronger airway inflammation [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. Briefly, the experiment mice in all groups, except the NSC group, were sensitized i .…”

“…Immediately after BALF was harvested, the peritoneal macrophages of the experiment mice were isolated and performed as previously described [ 35 , 36 , 38 , 39 ]. Briefly, the isolated peritoneal macrophages (>95%) from each experiment mouse were adjusted to the cell density of 2 × 10 6 cells/mL TCM medium for culture.…”

“…Ingestion of a PUFA or its higher derivatives like fish oil have been shown to suppress the synthesis of the n‐6 series of leukotrienes by competing and inhibiting the metabolism of the arachidonic acid, which exhibited unique and essential roles in an allergic response 10,11 . As the best resources for additional PUFAs, the PSO also has been known to possess great potential in the regulation of lung function 5,12 . Considering the lack of studies addressing the biological potential and scientific information of PSO, the present study aims to assess the pharmacological activities and the toxicological profile of PSO.…”
