Protective effects of astaxanthin on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in bovine endometrial epithelial cells†

Abstract: Astaxanthin (AST), a natural antioxidant carotenoid, has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects. However, to our knowledge, no study has specifically addressed the potential protective effects of AST against bovine endometritis. The purpose of this study was to examine whether treatment with AST could protect endometrial epithelial cells against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory injury. Treatment of bovine endometrial (BEND) epithelial cell line with AST reduced LPS-induced production of int… Show more

“…For in vitro assays, NIH 3T3 cells were cultured in DMEM containing 10% FBS and 1% AA. To evaluate cytotoxicity of Lec NS and ASTA@Lec NS, cells were seeded into a 96-well plate at a density of 10,000 cells per well and incubated in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO 2 at 37°C 34,35. After 12 h incubation, different concentrations of the nano-liposols were added to the cells and…”

“…Furthermore, AST significantly increased the expression of claudin, a tight junction protein that may play an important role in maintaining the host endometrial defense barrier against pathogenic infection. Collectively, these results suggest that AST is a promising agent for endometritis ( 19 ).…”

“…Likewise, the beneficial role of this carotenoid in dry eye treatment was confirmed in human corneal epithelial cells via reduction in TNF-α and IL-1β levels [217]. Finally, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of this carotenoid have been demonstrated in other in vitro models, including bovine endometritis [218], gastric inflammation by H. pylori [219], and osteoporosis [220].…”
