Protective Effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CCFM8610 against Acute Cadmium Toxicity in Mice

Abstract: bThis study evaluated the protective effects of Lactobacillus plantarum CCFM8610, a selected probiotic with good cadmium binding capacity, against acute cadmium toxicity in mice. Ninety mice were divided into prevention and therapy groups. In the prevention groups, CCFM8610 was administered at 10 9 CFU once daily for 7 days, followed by a single oral dose of cadmium chloride at 1.8 mg cadmium for each mouse. In the therapy groups, the same dose of CCFM8610 was administered for 2 days after an identical single … Show more

“…Our results show that when Cd is introduced orally, treatment with L. plantarum CCFM8610 decreases intestinal Cd absorption by increasing fecal Cd excretion (Fig. 2), an effect that can be attributed to its good Cd sequestration capability (17). In addition, CCFM8610 also decreases tissue Cd accumulation (Fig.…”

“…In our previous study, L. plantarum CCFM8610, a selected lactobacillus with good Cd-binding ability in vitro, was shown to have protective effects against acute Cd toxicity in mice (17). The intestinal Cd sequestration ability of CCFM8610 appeared to be important, but it was unclear whether all of its protective effects can be attributed to this single protection route.…”

“…Probiotics have the ability to bind and detoxify some heavy metals [13]. This propriety could be a promising solution for heavy metal removal from water, liquid food, and from the body of humans and animals [14]. Besides heavy metal binding capacity, lactic acid bacteria also are known to have antioxidative properties, which may be another important characteristic for heavy metal toxicity protection [15].…”
