Protective mechanisms against oxidative stress and angiopathy in young patients with diabetes type 1 (DM1)

Abstract: The increased esRAGE and FRAP with increased levels of CML and MDA possibly reflects a protective response against the formation of diabetic complications in these young diabetic patients.

“…These findings may suggest a counter-regulatory action of the antioxidant markers in an attempt to protect against the glucose-mediated oxidative stress during the OGTT in obese children with IGT. This has been described in young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) [53]. Furthermore, a negative correlation between insulin and Apo1fas response curves was noted in children with IGT, which is in agreement with the finding that the Apo1fas AUC was negatively correlated with insulin in these children.…”

“…The TBARS marker has been identified at increased levels in the serum of adult patients with DM2, 28 and with diabetic neuropathy. 29 Similarly, elevated MDA concentrations have also been found in children with DM1 and microalbuminuria by our group 30 and in patients with DM1 and DM2 by others. 31 Given that our markers PrMDA and PrTBARS both measure aldehydes of lipid peroxidation origin (with PrMDA measuring specifically the aldehyde MDA), their molar sum is a more representative marker of lipid peroxidized protein-associated DM1.…”
