“…Ocular prosthesis is a modality of facial prosthesis that aims to repair total or partial ocular bulb losses or deformities. The main goals are to restore facial esthetics, prevent eyelid collapse and deformity, protect the socket against injuries caused by foreign bodies, dust and smoke, reestablish the correct route of the lachrymal secretion to prevent accumulation in the cavity, and preserve muscular tonus to avoid anti-symmetrical alterations that might gradually install (1). There are references to globe repairing in the Egyptian, Aztec, Roman and Inca civilizations, using rudimentary artificial eyes manufactured from a wide sort of materials, which attempted to reproduce the lost esthetics.…”

“…A deterioração é causada principalmente pela exposição ambiental à luz ultravioleta (UV), à poluição do ar e às mudanças na umidade e temperatura. O manuseio da prótese durante a limpeza e a aplicação de adesivos e aditivos cosméticos também podem alterar as propriedades físicas e a estabilidade da cor do material 11,18,16 (Figura 1). A confecção das próteses óculopalpebral e ocular seguiram as seguintes etapas: 1.…”

“…The absence of ocular content may be congenital [1] or acquired due to surgical removal which can be indicated in several cases such as traumas [2][3][4], cancer, blind painful eye, microphathalmos, endophthalmitis, and suprachoroidal hemorrhage [3]. The ocular defects can be corrected by prostheses which have many functions such as restore the esthetic, prevent eyelid deformation, protect the anophthalmic cavity, orientate the lacrimal flux, and avoid its accumulation in this cavity [5]. Furthermore, the ocular prosthetic rehabilitation is associated to psychosocial improvement, once the prostheses are able to influence positively the interpersonal relations [6,7], which leads to a positive impact on the quality of life.…”
