Protocol for Functional Assessment of Adults and Older Adults after Hospitalization for COVID-19

Abstract: The study was approved by the Ethics Committee for the Analysis of Research Projects of the HCFMUSP (approval number: 34115720.5.0000.0068). Study design and locationThis cohort study is in progress, and will evaluate 400 patients who were admitted to referral hospitals for SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study will conduct a 1-year follow-up among these patients at four evaluation time points: 1, 4, 6, and 12 months after hospital discharge.

“… 31 This syndrome can negatively influence the quality of life of the individual, and long-term follow-up studies on persistent symptoms in patients after hospital discharge following COVID-19 are considered fundamental. 32 In addition, hospitalization can lead to disabilities due to underlying disease and low levels of mobility, even with adequate treatment. This condition can cause serious long-term consequences, including an increased risk of hospital readmission, mortality, and symptoms possibly lasting for months after hospital discharge.…”

“…Finally, only a few studies with a small number of participants have evaluated the impairment of ambulation in adults and older adults hospitalized with COVID-19 [32,33,45]. Therefore, post-hospital follow-up is necessary to investigate possible people suffering from Post COVID Syndrome [46,47]. Our study, despite the fact that it can only show associations, contributes to filling this gap in the literature and seeks to elucidate the functional impact of COVID-19 on older adults, helping to devise new interventions for COVID-19 prevention and rehabilitation related to this population.…”

“…We conducted a 1-year follow-up among patients who were admitted to referral hospitals for SARS-CoV-2 infection between April 2020 to April 2021. (10) After discharge from hospital, patients were evaluated at two points: 1 and 12 months after hospital discharge. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee for the Analysis of Research Projects of the HCFMUSP (approval number: 31942020.0.0000.0068).…”
